Los Monitongos . The Monitongos definition is applied in Cuba to natural forms of the relief that present unusual configurations recognized by its sculptural beauty and because they are looked like to different figures of the lively and inanimate world: strange prominences, abrupt rocks, sculptures similar to diverse objects, sometimes as mushroom hats, or like flattened domes, cakes, primitive idols, turtles, locomotives of a train, and other diverse objects.
Monitongos, National Monument, from December, 1991, are geologic formations constituted more than 50 million years ago.
The stranger forms of these hills have originated as consequence of the elements, that softens their rocks, for the fluvial erosion and for the wind, factors that destroy the conglomerate.
The process of origin of the Monitongos is complex. These heights can reach up to 181 m on the sea level and they are separated by fluvial tectonic valleys in V form.
In the superior part, vegetable covering it doesn't exist and on them vegetation is developed conformed by an immense melocactus population that is developed in rings form (endemic species with local character Melocactus var evae).
In the low part (valleys), a brown floor appears, always recovered by a forest green, quite preserved, where they appear around 40 vegetable species, endemic many of them, and wooden species very hard and of great value.
The fauna in this place, contains great variety of birds, some reptiles, jutías, deer and other mammals that are protected in the caves and hollows that are plentiful in the area.
The Monitongos is characteristic of Guantanamo, their value is environmental, they contain a great beauty, are atypical and exotic, and its view is beautiful and attractive.
They are inside the Sierra Maestra National Park like an ecological reservation.
